Origins of FREAK PARADE ...

Imagine working on a painting, or a poem, for four years – touching up details, removing and re-creating sections. Finally the time comes to release your work, to let it (as Bauhaus would say) “Strip your feet of lead my friend, strip your feet of lead”.

As the long delayed (and awaited I’m kindly told) VBB album “Freak Parade” goes through the final process of release, I’m forced to reflect on how this album started. Three seminal moments come to mind:

1. A backstage moment with Peter Murphy and Melinda (Bunny) at Toronto’s Phoenix Concert Theatre,

2. A magical performance in 2006 in the U.K. opening for ‘The Damned’ at England’s famous Gothic Weekend in Whitby, and most profoundly…

3. This moment in a far away practice studio in the harbour sector of Toronto, way back in 2005. We were waiting for ‘Devil Man’ who was lead guitar for the VBB at the time, I had just finished writing what would become the title track for our new album, and wanting to ‘test drive’ the tune, I convinced Bunny, Siren and Sunshine to give it a shot…
WARNING: This footage is très freaky and not for the faint of heart! ;p

VBB music on TV series THE BEST YEARS - Again!...

We’ve been very lucky as a band in that along with the fun that we have as Vampire Beach Babes, we also have the pleasure of being involved in the writing for any number of film/TV/Theatre projects that pass our way. Baron Marcus has been busy writing music for many independent films and projects, and recently was asked back for an encore!

‘The Best Years’, a popular TV series will feature the second VBB song “Only In Darkness” in season 2 episode 16, airing this month. Baron Marcus extends a big ‘thank you’ to our awesome publishers, to Instinct Entertainment, our production staff, and especially to ‘Bunny’ who’s awesome co-writing and vocals are featured on the track. “Only In Darkness” will be included on the upcoming VBB album “Freak Parade” available in summer 2010. VBB tracks to ITunes as the new VBB album comes your way ...

We are very excited to announce that some of the advance tracks from the upcoming VBB album "Freak Parade" are on their way to being released online! Thank you to every one on the hard working VBB team for your heroic efforts in getting this great stuff from studio to our awesome fans. And yes - look forward to some special Vampire Beach Babe performances in the not-so-distant future!

Also keep your eyes on the Baron Marcus Project for some ground breaking work in entertainment media... the intrigue grows as Baron Marcus finds that the strange war torn world of Purgatory is beginning to bleed through to our world - via the nightclubs.

The gates are open and the GAME begins ...

So the time has begun for things to get a little more complex! Imagine that the VBB, as a band, was a front for a bunch of vampires (and other para-dimesionals) to travel around the globe (undetected by the powers that be) in search of gateways to another dimension. Imagine that this ragged band of misfits FINALLY GOT THROUGH!

This is where the VBB story opens a new chapter, and “The Baron Marcus Project” (as named after a joint CIA-Vatican paranormal investigation file) begins...

ALIVE!! On the battlefield (battle-stage) again - and loving it...

We have the privilege to be playing with Theo and the Skyscrapers form NYC next week at the legendary El Mocambo in Toronto.

Theo was lead vox for one of the hardest working bands in the biz called The Lunachicks - they gigged hells half acre (and hit the Warped tour twice over)!! Her new band Theo and the Skyscrapers is a mind-blowing blend of Banshees-like dark wave and pure hot Glam. Glam-Noir (my fave) plain and simple. Absolutely not to be missed.

The El Mocambo (in Toronto Canada) opened it's doors as a tavern in 1850. Just after WW II it became known as an infamous ballroom dancehall. Since then, here are a few of the personalities who performed there:

Marilyn Monroe (1958)
Rolling Stones (1977)
The Runaways (1977)
Elvis Costello (1978)
DEVO (1978)
Lou Reed (1979)
U2 (1980)
Duran Duran (1981)
The New York Dolls (1988)
and others include...
Blondie, Police, The Ramones, Rush, Black Flag and Patti Smith

SO - of course it is the proper place for a few ol' ethereal vamps like us to haunt don't you think? Let's rock...

Angels, demons and all friends alike, we are pleased to announce...

VBB music on TV series THE BEST YEARS...

The music business is so strange – it seems that you work at it so long and hard with very little recognition or reward, to a point (for us, 10 years later!) that you forget that there ever might be recognition or reward, then, of course, it all comes together. You fans have made it all such a rewarding experience lately. Around the world every one of you fans has made a big difference for us – your encouragement and involvement has helped us keep the faith.

The latest in VBB news is that Instinct Entertainment has set us up with the TV series THE BEST YEARS – they are using some of our music in their Halloween episode (to be aired later this year throughout North America).

Preparations continue for the release of our new album in April – stand by for more news on that soon!

There is something BIG happening...

There is a magic coming to life in the glam-noir scene. Fashion, music, events and characters about town are at a new level of inspiration. From Manhattan US to London UK (all of which the Vampire Beach Babes had their solid share of last year) there is something big happening.

I believe that we are entering a new pop era – of mythic proportions. The dice are rolling, friends. I think there is some great music to come in 2007!

Elegance, camaraderie and decadence...

Some great events are approaching for the Vampire Beach Babes. On Saturday October 21st we will be performing a specially written ‘dark-operetta’ for the finale of the Northbound Leather gala fashion show at the Docks in Toronto. This huge fetish fashion event is one of the most grand of its kind..

It was a fantastic experience to blend light-classical elements with some dark Gothic-Electronic-Industrial influences in composing the Northbound piece. I call it ‘Finale Arcanum’. I am so pleased with it that we are considering putting it on the upcoming album.

We are also very excited about the upcoming European shows:

Thursday October 26th Blackpool Westcoast Rock Cafe U.K. Tour
Friday October 27th Whitby Gothic Weekend   festival - support opener for The Damned at the Spa Pavillion. U.K. Tour
Saturday October 28th Plymouth Plymouth Students Union U.K. Tour

The U.K. organizers have been awesome to work with. We are very much looking forward to meeting many of the friends and fans who have been such a great support for us.

The Whitby Gothic Weekend is a particular honour for us. It is of the most important Gothic events in Europe, and being a part of it is of great personal significance to me. Elegance, camaraderie and decadence are the order of the day – what better ways to celebrate the season!

A Great Honour For Us...

Awesome show last Saturday night at EDGE 102.1 FM! Thank you everyone - especially the EDGE staff who have been an incredible support for the band from day one.

Check out the pictures from the EDGE 102.1 Saturday Sept. 16th show.

And now for the big announcements…

Over the past 20 years, Northbound Leather has become one of the world’s foremost fetish fashion design houses. Every year they have what Skin Two magazine has described as “the worlds biggest single fetish night” – and believe me, at 3000 people it is! Northbound Leather has commissioned me to write a ‘Glam-Gothic’ song for the grand finale of this world class fashion show. This is a great honour, and work on the project has begun. We will be performing this song live on stage during the finale on Saturday October 21st at The Docks Entertainment Complex in Toronto Canada.

Also, we are now locking down the final details for our European shows in late October. Stay tuned for more exciting news as we count down the days to our UK shows in Blackpool, Plymouth and the Whitby Gothic Weekend in West Cliff, Whitby, North Yorkshire.

WOW! Thank you everyone for your support! What an awesome tour - with all the rock-star high points and road-dog low points accounted, the tour was a resounding success. Thank you to Ground Sphere in Allegan, High Five in Columbus, Garfield Artworks in Pittsburgh, The Penny Arcade in Rochester, Bottom's Up in Queens and the Conduit in Trenton - thank you all for hosting us on our journey. A special thanks to the awesome fans in Pittsburgh who bought up all of our t-shirts (in one night) - you are a town that knows how to party! It was a great privilege to meet so many fans and supporters in the USA, we really look forward to visiting many of you again soon.

Morbid Outlook interview

Morbid Outlook Magazine out of New York has always been one of my very favourite ‘zines in the scene – so it was an absolute pleasure when the wonderful Mistress McCutchan asked us to answer some interview questions for their current edition. Their interview format is innovative and entertaining in that they ask the same set of questions to the various featured bands. In this way you get a glimpse of how the band thinks (a little scary in our case), but also you get a feel for how different bands in the scene compare and contrast in their humour and taste. I highly recommend taking a peak at the various interviews, particularly The Damned, Dresden Dolls, Voltaire, Rasputina, The Mission, Alien Sex Fiend and Bella Morte.

Thank you Morbid Outlook for your support over the years!

Thursday March 2nd, 2006

Thank you everyone!

The band and I are completely blown away by the continued web traffic you all have been giving our site.

For two years now you have sustained around 3800 unique visitors per month at around 5200 visits peaking at around 247000 hits per month!

Furthermore, our bandwidth stats indicate that people are sticking around and playing lots of the music. That is the greatest compliment to us - that folks around the world are enjoying what we are creating – thank you!

The country featuring our heaviest international traffic has recently switched from the Netherlands to Australia. And second place has moved from Germany to the United Kingdom. I am sure that the band agrees with me when I say that we look forward to seeing and playing for ALL of you.

Also, with our being featured recently on the premiere episode of television series “Shadow Hunter” we gained some new fans and friends – welcome all, and hang on to yer breeches because we have some new tunes (and some big news) coming your way soon.

Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes...

Oh yes my fellow denizens of the dark – the sun has set on this beach and like it or not, changes happen. If surfing is riding the balance of nature, matching her power with our will – then surfing is what we’ve been doing. And we’re having an inspired blast for sure. The biggest wave to hit this old vamp is the new music – unlike anything we’ve done before, it is HUGE stuff, and I hope that you all enjoy it as much as we do making it.

We will be posting actual songs-in-progress here every week. These songs are NOT finished musical pieces - they are un-mastered rough mixes. Some of them will be bizarre concepts. Some will make the album cut, and others won’t (and some may never be heard from again). You will see them as they evolve mix by mix, over the next few months, as we get closer to completing the album.

You are welcome to let us know which ones you like and which ones you don’t. So stay tuned and be a part of a little rock ‘n’ roll history!

And that brings us a step closer to the many wonderful fans and friends in Europe – so get ready because the VBB are on the move.

Speaking of which, we have been very busy in studio the past month – and the result are mind blowing – easily the best music I have ever had the chance to be a part of. It is HEAVY. It is MYSTICAL. It is HARD and it is DARK. It seems that the sun has set and we are surfing the twilight.

So get ready – we’ll be posting some of these new and unreleased demo songs -here on the website -over the next few weeks.

Merry Christmas!!!...

…and Happy Holidays to everyone. Let’s face it, it’s not always the most easy time of year, but if we take a minute and strip away all the hustle and bustle there is a timeless peace and magic to be found. It doesn’t matter who you are or where you come from, religion, culture or whatever – the peace and joy of the message of light and hope is universal. For those who dare to look...

The mystical process of songwriting can never be reduced to mechanics – I am increasingly convinced that songs have a life of their own. My favorites are downright CREEPY! The following is a song I started long ago called FREAK PARADE, but on a whim, last practice, I introduced it to the band. Bunny, Sunshine and Siren in their absolute brilliance took the song where it had never been. This is their absolute first time jamming it out – the creepy, silly, magic in the room was sublime and hilarious!

Watch if you DARE!

A season of spirits – ghosts, memories, and shadows

What a wild and wonderful ride this season has been - from a fantastic feature by the Ryreson University paper “EyeOpener” to the awesome airplay and support from Little Steven’s Underground Garage radio show. We have been very busy Vampire Beach Babes indeed… all the while cranking out more potential tunes for the upcoming album.

With the days getting darker, and (depending on where you are on this planet) the weather getting colder, it can be a little depressing. But something I’ve found is that this time of year can be sublime and hauntingly beautiful. Between Halloween and Christmas is definitely a season of spirits – ghosts, memories, and shadows. It’s kind of a lost zone of seasons. Harvest is done, and winter is yet to come in full force. It is a season of shadows. And with a little imagination, those shadows can come to life in spooky and interesting ways. Yep, this time of year is a good one for bundling up, kicking back and listening to the forces of nature. Who knows? Maybe those shadows have something useful to say.

What an awesome and inspiring time of year - Halloween!!!

It seems that even the most ordinary of people revel in what many of us here live year round – the mystique, the arcane and the outright silly.

We had the chance to play live some of the new songs that we have been writing over the past month at an outstanding soirée put on by Groovegames in celebration of their latest Xbox video game release “Land of the Dead” – an awesome zombie shoot-em-up thriller! Now this was an office party unrivaled since Rome itself, what a great time – and I’m happy to say that the new tunes were killer (in true undead/zombie fashion).

Here are some of our usual pre-show backstage antics:

Of course this is a very busy time for a Vampire Beach Babe like myself, but a few highlights of the season worth mentioning include the wonderful Northbound Leather ‘Climax’ fetish fashion gala (one of the worlds most extravagant fetish culture events) and Rue Morgue Magazine’s annual Halloween bash ‘GRAVEYARD A GO-GO’!

Show Announcement - first public performance of some of the new material!

The Vampire Beach Babes are busy writing and recording for their
upcoming album. Lead singer 'Baron Marcus' tells us that there is a
slightly harder and darker feel to the new songs, reminiscent of their
first album "Reckless Summer".

"I found great inspiration in our last album "Beach Blanket Bedlam",
in it's exploration of the summertime archetypes. But I feel the
'Vampire' part of the VBB has occupied my consciousness lately -
appropriately enough seeing as we are writing for the album in the
wonderful season of Halloween! We are also finding inspiration in the
recent industrial darkwave resurgence, KMFDM, VNV Nation and Birthday
Massacre. As a band we are definitely rediscovering our teeth, it is
quite refreshing, and the fans seem to be willingly gracing us with
their sweet necks."

The Vampire Beach Babes will be performing to all the ghouls and gals
at the Hilarious House of Frightenstein Festival on Halloween Night
(Monday, October 31st) at Toronto's Rancho Relaxo (300 College
Street).

Along with the VBB performing new material from their upcoming album,
the night will feature select episodes from the classic cult TV show
Hilarious House of Frightenstein.

Writing - Recording - Writing - Recording!!!

We are now recording some of the first songs since the last album – and we are really pumped about what we are hearing in the rough takes. The Devilman, as some of you might know, is not only a great guitarist but quite an extraordinary producer. He has been rocking the wee hours of the morning working out some new ideas in his studio while I have been working with Vezi Tayyeb in the Kensington Market section of Toronto. It is a real privilege to work with Vezi who has in past worked with the likes of Daniel Lanois and Bob Ezrin.

Earlier this week the band was hanging out and going over some of the very early takes of the new sound. I think we all agree that this next album is going to be some of our best work ever.

Toronto SUN: Vampire flies to the rescue
AFTER STRUGGLING to take down a suspect at the CNE, Police Chief Julian Fantino was thankful at least one Toronto vampire doesn't sleep during the day. Self-described vampire Baron Marcus did his best Buffy the Vampire Slayer imitation Sunday, jumping in to help the chief and another officer as they struggled to secure a man who was allegedly taking pictures of small children.

Click Here To View The Video CP24:

It now appears police may have stumbled on a goldmine of evidence after a dramatic takedown involving Chief Julian Fantino at the C.N.E. on Sunday.

Police spent most of Monday scouring the home of 42-year-old suspect Mateo Caruso. They left with a large collection of DVDs, CDs, videotapes and computers, all of which have to be carefully analyzed by child porn experts.

By now, the entire city knows the story. The Chief was on patrol with Sgt. Bob Guglick on the midway, when citizens told them about a suspect taking furtive pictures of children, using two digital cameras.

When the pair confronted the man, he physically resisted, becoming involved a desperate struggle to get away.

With the help of several C.N.E. patrons, Fantino and his colleague were finally able to subdue the man and get him in handcuffs. It was instincts, the Chief reflects a day later. It's part of the job, whether you're a Police Chief in an office, a sergeant in their supervisory role or frontline police officer, the job's the job. We're police officers first."

Guglick was injured when he fell on his elbow, but wasn't seriously hurt. The Chief's sole complaint - a scuffed up uniform.

Fantino admits to being a little sore after the action, but hes more pleased that four citizens volunteered to help him subdue the subject.

One of them was Baron Marcus, the lead singer of the Goth rock band Vampire Beach Babes. We're all citizens and we all care about our community, you know, whether you're the top of police or whether you're a trouble-making rock 'n' roller, he laughs.

Fantino wants to see the Good Samaritans rewarded with civilian citations.

Mateo is facing charges of mischief, assaulting police and interfering with property. Those could increase, depending on what investigators find on the items seized from his home. He'll be in court for a bail hearing on Tuesday.

Open Letter to Toronto Media Outlets

With regards to the Fantino takedown of a suspect at the CNE on Sunday August 22nd, there was in important detail left out of some reporting. The apprehension of the violently resisting suspect included not only another officer, but also members of the public. One of the civilians who assisted the police happened to be 'Baron Marcus ' lead singer of Toronto gothic surf band " Vampire Beach Babes "."It was quite uncanny, I had just shaken Mr. Fantino's hand, having told him how I have appreciated his character and contributions to the force when suddenly there was a violent struggle nearby" says the 6'4" bleach blond VBB front man. "Mr. Fantino bolted to the officers assistance without hesitation and I followed. I don't like to interfere with police business, but with the suspect kicking like a mule, I was concerned that he was going to hurt himself or someone else. I simply secured the suspects left arm and shoulder, which permitted Mr. Fantino and the other officer to secure the suspect more efficiently". "I don't think that people generally appreciate how difficult it can be to subdue a person without hurting them, particularly one that was resisting so violently. I was really impressed with Mr. Fantino - who was in dress uniform at the time - I mean here is a guy at the top who has never lost the passion to serve his community, even on the gritty street level. As an entertainer I have seen a lot of things, rock 'n' roll can be a little rough and tumble, but I must say I was really impressed." 'Baron Marcus ' of the Vampire Beach Babes was personally thanked by Mr. Fantino and stands on file as witness to the apprehension of the suspect.

What a time it has been for the band! The last show at Fetish MASQUERADE was awesome fun (videos & photos) and now we are scrambling to finish the master tapes and artwork for our upcoming album "Beach Blanket Bedlam". The rumors are true, we are finalizing a record deal with Divine/Red/Sony for an October 04 release date. The ultra-cool German music magazine 'Sonic Seducer' featured our interview in their last issue lending us great support and introducing us to a ton of new fans througout Europe.

A little while ago I had the pleasure of attending the retro release of a fantastic influence of the Romantic pop period of the 1980s - Images In Vogue. It really became clear to me how, as pop musicians big or small, we belong to a great continuum of influence. The event was hosted at DJ Lazarus' awesome club Fun Hause on the infamous Queen West strip in Toronto Canada.

I would like to announce that we now have an official band photographer. I have known Zaiden for some time now and have deeply admired his world class art and fashion photography. Indeed I believe that he will be increasingly known around the world as one of the pop industries visual masters.

Also we just posted two episodes of VBB TV from inside the Recording Studio!

Thank you all for being such an awesome and appreciative audience.

Devilman is seeking a minion!

Do you wish to become slave labour for the Devilman? Would you like to string his guitars and make sure his gear runs smoothly (with the force of darkness behind it). How do you feel about long, uncompensated hours of labour for someone who will undoubtedly take your soul in the end? If this sounds like you, then the Devilman may have a job for you...(PS You must be Toronto based - sorry, but minions from the outer circle of hell are just to far away for the Devilman to bother with!)

Hello everyone! Thank you all so much for your wonderful e-mails and support from all around the world. Many of you have been asking about the upcoming album - and indeed we are now close to completing it.

It is a very exciting time for the band, negotiating all of the details leading up to the album completion. We have a new band member, Boa, who will be singing backup and causing general mayhem. We are updating the VBB website to make it easier to add new content and video on the fly - yes, think of it as VBB TV and YOU can be a part of the chaos! We might very well be the first 'unreality show'! I will have more details on that for you in late February.

Once in a while we will be releasing unfinished 'sneak previews' of upcoming tunes. You will be able to hear our behind-the-scenes work in progress - and you will be our very own lab-rats for our rock 'n' roll experimentation. Yaaay!

To kick off this whole process, here is our first assault on your already tattered senses - just in time to get you thinking about the sun and the sand, the rough demo mix of our new song 'Hot Foot'!!!

Enjoy, and let us know what you think. Thank you again for your awesome support!

VAMPIRE BEACH BABES GET TROMATIZED!
This month's RUE MORGUE CINEMACABRE movie night (Wednesday September 17, 2003) will offer a special treat for you TROMA fans. Lloyd Kaufman, president of Troma Entertainment (responsible for cult B-movie classics such as Surf Nazis Must Die and the Toxic Avenger series), has officially requested that Toronto-based gothic surf rockers the Vampire Beach Babes compose the theme song - called Tales From The Crapper (Pinch It Off) - for his next film TALES FROM THE CRAPPER. "I always pictured the Vampire Beach Babes as perfect for this kind of thing, and yet it is such a surprise and honour to be asked by a worldwide movie legend like Mr. Kaufman," commented lead singer Baron Marcus. "We wrote the theme song with the spirit of Troma as a guiding light - no doubt Toxie was lurking in the shadows with his mop while we came up with this anthem of such questionable taste." The band will be signing (perhaps in blood) at the Vatikan Nightclub (1032 Queen St. West in Toronto, Canada) prior to the screening of IRREVERSIBLE."

We just had our biggest month ever for web traffic: 165,000 hits for the month of May.
Don't forget the big show this Saturday!!!
Here is what NOW Magazine had to say about it:

----------------------------------------
Beach bloodsuckers
goth surf Vampire Beach Babes at the Bovine Sex Club (542 Queen West), Saturday (June 7), 1 am. $8. 416-504-4239. the antithesis to what most have come to expect from goths, local gothic surf band the Vampire Beach Babes are primarily concerned with having a good time and frolicking in the sun."Actually," says foppish bloodsucking dandy frontman Baron Marcus Von Zipper about the gothic surf amalgam, "I prefer the term "glam noir' because it beckons images of some sick cabaret. We're not a sick cabaret, but we'd make a good opening act for one."

The Babes combine the best aspects of retro horror kitsch with darker overtones of goth to create hilariously sinister and catchy tunes like Attack Of The Killer Bikinis, Surfing Swamp Monster From The Planet ZON and Gothic Surf-a-rama. Those who dare to attend the VBB Bovine gig will hear these old favourites as well as selections like Hotfoot and Spank That Thang from their upcoming third CD.

Sure to be a blast.

NOW magazine just gave our new EP Attack of the Killer Bikinis 4N's, here is what they had to say:

"In these giddy days of musical mix-and-match, new genrenauts are trying out ever more exotic sonic cocktails. Take Toronto's own gang of undead, the Vampire Beach Babes, who've been riding the retro trash wave as a gothic surf band. Combining the best aspects of retro horror kitsch with a dark undercurrent of goth, the babes draw on the self-parodying humour used to such advantage by the Cramps and make it their own. Shemale Murphyesque vocals give heft to pleasant-ly inane and sinister tunes like Hawaii Shirt From Hell and (Surfing Swamp Monster From The Planet) Zon (cue gong splash). Imagine Sisters of Mercy collaborating with Link Wray and Martin Denny. Now get yourself a margarita and shake that money-maker."
